Should men embrace skirts?

Many of you who know me personally or follow me on Twitter & Instagram will know that I've long been a fan of rocking a skirt from time to time. Is it because I like the freedom it gives me that other forms of bottomwear can't provide? Yes, but that's not the only reason why I'm an advocate of skirts for men. 

As the fashion industry is changing at an ever-quickly pace, designers are taking inspiration from their womenswear ranges and donning it in their menswear collections. I first became a fan of the 'man-skirt' after watching the Givenchy SS12 & FW12 shows, where Tisci plays with traditional perceptions of luxury and pushes the boundaries of masculinity further out.

So, are skirts becoming a thing of a norm amongst the male population? Just ask Kanye West. Mr. West, who I cite as one of my favourite fashion icons, is no stranger to pushing the limits of fashion. At his 2011 Coachella performance, who chose to wear a silk blouse from the Céline SS11 womenswear collection. Kanye West is famous all over the globe for his controversial comments, his arrogant persona and his ability to make people love him when we should really hate him, but most of all, he is famous for his music. During the Watch The Throne tour, he, on more occasions that one, rocked the $355 Givenchy leather skirt and dare I say it, he pulled it off.

Over time, I think fashion has become a catalyst for transgressing social codes and in my opinion, I think the man-skirt is the next BIG thing. You don't have to be a gay fashion icon or ballin’ rapper to wear one. By allowing men to rock the skirts and dresses, I believe will inject some much needed novelty and chic-ness into the world of men's fashion, and if worn correctly, can very much assert the masculinity.
